On March 10, 2006, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff met with leaders of the Interagency Coordinating Council on Emergency Preparedness and Individuals with Disabilities Subcommitees (learn more about the Interagency Coordinating Council Subcommittees). Secretary Chertoff asked these leaders for their recommendations regarding how the emergency preparedness, response and recovery process can be improved to benefit members of the disability community. They shared their personal experiences in responding to Hurricane Katrina and made recommendations for improvements that Secretary Chertoff should consider. The Secretary reaffirmed his commitment to make changes in the system, particularly by ensuring that key agencies have subject matter experts integrated into their operations.
